This quarter, Rotarians of the Rotary Club of East Montgomery County (RCEMC) will be focusing on supporting education and literacy. As part of that initiative, New Caney ISD Superintendent Matt Calvert was the guest speaker at the August 3rd RCEMC meeting. Mr. Calvert leads 18 schools at New Caney ISD with a student enrollment of 16,500. Students began the new school year on Monday, August 9.

New Caney ISD is providing traditional, in-person educational services for the 21-22 school year and will not have a remote learning option based on current information and circumstances. In-person instruction is critical for the academic success, as well as the social and emotional well-being, of the vast majority of students.

Mr. Calvert was accompanied by Trina Persson, Director of Recruitment and Retention and Education Foundation Liasion; Dr. Donda Slaydon, Porter Elementary School Principal; and Jennifer Adams, Porter Elementary School Media Specialist. RCEMC presented 60 books in honor of past speakers to Porter Elementary School. Both Slaydon and Adams were excited to see all of the books that will be added to their collection.

RCEMC showed their appreciation to Mr. Calvert by donating the book, “The Night Library” by David Zeltser, in his honor. This year’s donated books will go to Splendora ISD’s Timber Lakes Elementary School.
