The second meeting of the year for the Rotary Club of East Montgomery County (RCEMC) included information from James Fredricks of the Texas Destination Resort Alliance. James “Jim” Fredricks is a long-time resident of Montgomery County and former publisher of The Courier. Fredricks spoke to the Rotary Club about the possibility of bringing gambling to Texas.

As part of the Texas Destination Resort Alliance, Fredricks explained the proposals would create special casino licenses for four “destination resorts” in the state’s four largest metropolitan areas: Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, San Antonio, and Austin. At the same time, it would establish a Texas Gaming Commission to regulate the casinos, tax table games, and slot machines, and separately legalize sports betting. The legislation would require amending the Texas Constitution, which currently bans most gaming in Texas. That is only possible with a two-thirds vote of lawmakers in both chambers, and then voter approval in the November election. For more information, visit txdra.com

RCEMC President presented Fredricks with the library book, "Albie's First Word: A Tale Inspired by Albert Einstein's Childhood" by author Jacqueline Tourville and illustrated by Wynne Evans. The book will be donated to a New Caney Elementary School library later this year.
